PERSONALITY | ||||||
In a way, Edward is still very much caught up in the past. Being from 1901 and changed in 1918 he's from a time much more conservative than modern day America. His beliefs also echo this. Multiple times in the series he comments on being "unsavable" and doomed to go to hell as his soul has been lost due to being changed into a vampire. It doesn't matter that he was dying from Spanish enfluenza, he would have preferred death. This is because of his religion. Later on he refuses to change Bella into his kind because he doesn't want to doom her to the same fate. It's important to note his infactuation with religion as well due to how he acted back when he was younger after Carlise changed him. He chose to bite and feed on humans, but it was only murderers and criminals that he attacked. He still thought he was an awful person for doing it, even if those people may have had deserved a worse fate. His principles from this time also link to how he acts with Bella later on. He prefers to keep a distance from her, not allowing certain intimacies until marraige. It isn't only because of what he is, but because of how he was raised. He comments that men would have courted a woman, maybe hooked her arm through his for a walk in the park and maybe stolen a quick kiss or two, but it was never more than that. Even in the modern age he doesn't allow steps further than that until much later. He's also incredibly polite to those he meets properly the first time and introduces himself properly. Despite his rather archaic outlook, he can make amusing quips. When Bella tells him that he has to give her answers, he responds with "Yes, No, To get to the other side" showing he can have a sense of humor as well. He is a fan of sports (baseball in particular) and enjoys going hunting with Emmett and Jasper, so, even though he's had a lot of struggles in his life he's quite capable of just going out and having fun. Due to the nature of the series this doesn't come up often, but there are instances of it. His loyalty and determination to keep his loved ones safe is one of his biggest strengths. For the longest time it was only him and Carlisle, which is why he truly views him as a father figure by this point. The family move as a unit, and it is only when Bella gets in the middle of things that changes and it's only because his outlook on the world becomes pinpointed on her and less on them. At the start, he actually tries to keep away from her for their sake. Due to how long they live they already have to move towns often to ensure no one figures out the truth, by doing this they can't let an accident happen or they'd have to move sooner than planned and it would put the family in jeopardy. Alongside his loyalty, his sense of control is also impressive. He describes Bella as his "own personal brand of herion" because of her scent, yet he has never actually broken and tried to attack her in their time together. Even before her, he attends schools (and has done for years now) without any incidents. The only time he truly loses it is when James attacks Bella, meaning that it takes his loved ones being at risk for him to lose his calm and truly attack someone. Jealousy is one emotion that he does not do well with, however. This is partly because he can be arrogant about how people view him (he's more than aware of what his looks, scent etc do) and he thinks he's a better choice. Of course, this mostly applies to Bella once they are in a relationship and when Jakob enters the scene. He would never have felt jealousy for any of his siblings finding love, in fact it would be the opposite. He wants nothing more than for them to be happy. Vampires and shapeshifters (referred to as werewolves more commonly in this even though it isn't accurate) don't have a good history at all. Vampires say they stink, other insults are thrown in return etc. There is very much an idea that seems to mimic vampires being "elegant" and "beautiful" versus the shapeshifters being "dirty" and "unkept", and Edward is no different with that mentality. Partly because of the "wet dog" smell they associate with them. Other "bad" traits of his personality is the fact that he can also be suffocating once he truly cares for another person. His relationship with Bella is messed up in that he can't keep himself away from her, and even watches her sleep. It's an obsessive trait that he does struggle to control, even if it is only watching and is actually not anything perverse, he calls it a "fascination" and doesn't realise that it borders on stalking. He can be inquisitive, especially if someone is difficult for him to "read" - i.e. his mind reading ability doesn't work. After realising he couldn't read Bella's thoughts, he asked her loads of questions as it finally made someone interesting. However, if anyone asks about his own abilities he walks off without answering anything which is what happens with Bella. He also gets incredibly defensive when she first starts questioning him, telling her that "no one would believe you anyway" in response to her telling him that she was 100% certain he stopped the car from crashing into her. He's intelligent, but after 80 or so years of attending school and University and covering different subjects, he's had the time to perfect his knowledge. He's also able to speak Spanish for this reason as well. In fact, the family have a framed section on their wall of all their graduation caps stuck in rows. He says they have a "joke" about how many times they've done it by now. In contrast to how he seems to most people, he can be a bit of a show off. This happens mostly, again, around Bella once she learns of what he is. He takes her up to the top of the trees, drops and bounces an apple from his foot etc. His style of clothes also mimics with this as he wears a long stylish coat and quite "chic" items that were probably influenced by Alice. The only person he can't really be like that around is Charlie, Bella's dad. Considering his canon point, a lot of these traits haven't truly shown themselves yet and he comes across as someone who is well adjusted to his life as a vampire trying to pretend to live a normal life. He goes to school (except for those sunny days), hangs out with his family and seems "aloof" to those around him as he apparently (according to Jessica) thinks of himself as "too good" for any of the girls in Forks. While most of this is due to what he is, there is a hint of it partly being that no one in the area really is his type. He doesn't even try and seems to be quite content with living his life as it is day in, day out. In this sense, there aren't really any motivations in his life at this point. |
